                                        Namibia

I’ve visited Namibia for three times working in local projects in the field of music education and artistic work in cooperation with Oruuano of Namibian artists' union.

The workshops and concerts in Windhoek & Ovamboland (2001-2004) have been unforgettable.

The latest cooperation has been music-dance-production “HOPE.” The production was performed in Windhoek and in Vantaa year 2004. The work was carried out as a co-operation between Vantaa Dance Institute and the cities of Vantaa and Windhoek.

Roiskeläppä

is a group of enthusiastic actors and musicians making improvised theatre. I joined in the year 2005.

                                The Friendship Inn

The Friendship Inn is as it’s name suggests. I’ve spent there many a good time enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and interesting people. Musicians like to visit the Friendship Inn; I’ve joined in several spontaneous jam sessions. The concerts arranged on the covered lakeside terrace have a unique atmosphere enhanced by the beautiful setting.

Sibyl Vane is a charming folk-pop band whose music has got a lot of Irish influence. The band has been performing since 1996 in Finland and Ireland in pubs, concerts and business events & parties.

The repertoire of the band consists mainly of Elisa’s compositions of poems in English by various well-known poets. Also included are compositions by Matti Laitinen, as well as some real jewels of vocal and instrumental Irish music.

Playing together for many years has given Sibyl Vane it’s well refined sound. ”Sibyl Vane’s rich sound as a band will see it on it’s way to the top of Finnish music.” (Aulis Alatalo, Aamulehti 25.3.2003).

Sibyl Vane’s first album ”Woman of Stone” (1999) was released by Sibelius-Academy. You can find Sibyl Vane’s music also in a collection-CD called “O’Malley’s Music” (2002.)

Sibyl Vane:

Elisa Laiho: lead vocals, piano, 2-row accordion
Hanna Kangasniemi: whistles, recorders, vocals
Matti Laitinen: guitars, vocals
Heikki Kangasniemi: fiddle, mandolin

In addition to Sibyl Vane, the other Irish-style band I am a member of is called Shebean. We have had a long break since the members of the band have had other activities - but beware: We might come back!

(Leena Pikkumäki, Keskisuomalainen 17.3.2002.)

”Laiho, who studies singing among other things at the Sibelius-Academy, is a powerful interpreter who sang without difficulty from low to high register bringing to mind something between Eva Dalgren and Kate Bush. For a long time I haven’t heard anything as impressive as these Södergran-songs. Laiho has surprising charisma which allows the artist numerous options in musical direction.”
(Hannimari Heino, Uusimaa 8.5.2000.)
